Flying Pig Marathon
Hyde Park Party Zone

Sunday, May 5th

6:15-10:00am

Pig Works selected us to host the Party Zone in Hyde Park Square to cheer on racers and host spectators from 6:15a-10:00a. There will be two shifts you can choose from – 6:15a-8:00a or 8:00a-10:00a to show love to our neighbors by passing out snacks and water.

Join the party and sign up to volunteer! (enter “community” on the registration page to unlock the Party Zone sign up for HPCUMC. Enter the required information including t-shirt size for your free t-shirt and online waiver form. You are welcome to serve with your children but don’t need to sign them up.)

Sing with Us

Join Director of Music Ministries Ben Owen and Praise & Worship Leader Aimee Stockdale at Hyde Park Square from 8:00-9:00 am to sing encouraging songs, both old and new. Just like Christmas Caroling, all you need to do is show up, and sing! If you’ve ever wanted to the theme from Rocky directly after Guide My Feet (While I Run This Race), this is your chance to do it.

If you want a t-shirt, please sign up for the second shift (8:00a-10:00a) by April 24.

How to be a GREAT Party Animal serving in the Party Zone:

  • Make noise to encourage the runners: cheer, clap, play music, or make your own music.
  • Praise the runners individually.  Many runners will have their names on their bib. (Ex: “Go number one! You’re doing great!”) They will truly appreciate it.
  • Stay positive in your cheering. (No ‘boo’s, please!)
  • Make distinctive signs at home and bring with you!
  • Do something to make runners smile. Sing, dance, or do tricks such as juggling. It may put the runners at ease for a few moments.

Other tips so you can party on:

  • Prepare for the weather. It may be cool in the morning but warm up by 10:00a. You want to be sure to be able to stay to cheer on the runners in the back of the pack as well.
  • If you see a runner who appears to need some help or medical attention, please try to remember his or her race number and inform a course monitor. If the runner’s injury looks serious, please try to find a police officer on the course.
  • Please do not crowd the runners by standing in the street, especially in the earlier miles. This may cause a backup for the runners and make the marathon more difficult.
  • If a runner does not smile back or talk to you, please do not take this personally. The runner may be deep in concentration, fatigued, or in pain. Lack of response is usually not for lack of appreciation.
  • Keep in mind that the runners in the back of the pack need the most encouragement, as they will be out there the longest. Be sure to cheer for them as well!
