During the month of June we will be going through a series called What is God Like? This sermon series is inspired by the children’s book “What is God Like?” by Rachel Held Evans and Matthew Paul Turner.
It is a book that explores children’s wonder and curiosity around the extravagance and love of God. Many of the prayers, benedictions, and calls to worship are quoted or inspired from “What is God Like?”
This book was published in 2021. It is a book that Rachel Held Evans and Matthew Paul Turner were working on together prior to Rachel’s sudden death in 2019.
Rachel has written many books about faith, doubt, and life in the Bible Belt. Her New York Times bestselling books include Inspired, Searching for Sunday, and A Year of Biblical Womanhood. I personally did not start reading Rachel’s books until after her sudden passing. She never met me and I’ve never met her, but through her words I have felt more seen by her than most people who have known me since I was born. Rachel has a way of making space with words for the both/and of life. Join me as we journey together with curiosity and open hearts to discover what God is like for all people.

On a table in the Welcome Center there are word bubbles set out for you to fill in with a noun, a verb, or an adjective that describes what God is like to you! Then you can use a pushpin and place it on the bulletin board. I can’t wait to see how God reveals themself to our community!
(“What God is Like”, is the book we give families after their child has been baptized. Hard copies can be found on the Welcome Center Desk as well as on the bookshelf in the Social Hall.)
