Walking in Moses’ Shoes

In December 1992 our son Blake was two and a half years old. My brother David was visiting from California as we gathered to celebrate Christmas.  At one point, David removed his boots. Blake, always the curious one, decided to try to put them on. David helped him, lifting him up into the tall, leather boots. The boots covered almost all of Blake and it was clear that he was dwarfed by them.  It is a humorous memory, watching Blake try to walk in David’s boots!

When I was a child, I thought of Moses as a large-than-life hero, an action figure that dazzled those around him with amazing feats.  The real truth is:

Moses killed an Egyptian man, and hid him in the sand.  Then he man fled from the Pharaoh and settled in Midian

Moses was not excited about God’s call for him to return to Egypt to lead God’s people out of slavery

Moses got so angry and frustrated when the people were disobedient and cried out to God saying, “What shall I do with this people?  They are almost ready to stone me.”

Joshua was called by God to be Moses’ successor.  The first chapter of Joshua reveals the challenges of walking in Moses’ shoes.  God’s words to Joshua:

“Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Moses’ life was filled with many challenges. While it is tempting to remember him as the strong, mighty leader of the people, that is just part of the story.

This weekend we will explore and unpack the story of the golden calf recorded in Exodus chapter 32.   Our Lenten series “Spiritual Reboot” continues with the sermon “The gods We Make.”  I look forward to connecting with you this weekend!

Peace,

Pastor Cathy
