It made the headlines: “Peleton holiday commercial sparks social media uproar”.
A woman expresses surprise at the gift she finds in her home on Christmas morning: A Peleton exercise bike. Over 700 million people reacted to the commercial, posting comments such as:
“What message is the man sending to his wife when he gives her an exercise bike?”
“Wow…She looks very thin already…she clearly is already working out! She does not need to exercise more!”
“People would also be outraged if she was overweight.”
“She’s a white, wealthy woman in a beautiful home…maybe she asked him for the Peleton!”
As we give and receive gifts with one another there are all kinds of social pressures such as “finding the perfect gift.” We try to spend the right amount of money so the gift is appropriate without appearing too lavish. Gift giving takes a lot of energy!
This week we continue the sermon series about God with the message “The God who gives.” I invite you to reflect upon our gift-giving God, including the depth of God’s love for you.
