Teaching

What is the first song you ever learned?

It can be hard to remember, potentially it could have been ABC, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Patty Cake, Happy Birthday, or maybe Jesus Loves the Little Children. We weren’t born knowing them, rather we were taught them. Sometimes there were motions taught to us with the words to remind us of what came next, like Patty Cake or the Ittsy Bittsy Spider. Sometimes they were taught to us before bed or in moments of travel to keep our minds and mouths preoccupied.

In Scott Erikson’s reflection this week of the stations of the resurrection, he unpacks the process of learning a song, the process of remembering the words while embodying the notes. It is a beautiful reflection; I highly recommend you all to take time and read it this week. However, as beautiful as he took the metaphor on teaching a song to apply to the passage Matthew 28: 16-20, the great commission, my heart led me in another direction in regards to Jesus’ teachings. My heart was led not to the song of the great commission, but rather the ears that never heard the final truth of God’s love and grace for all.

I hope you will join me online this week for a darker and twisty approach to a truth that we all need to know, remember, and embody as we move forward as the kindom of God.
