The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall because it had been founded on rock. – Matthew 7:25
In Matthew 7:24–27, Jesus concludes His Sermon on the Mount with a vivid parable that speaks directly to the foundation of our lives. He contrasts two builders: one wise, one foolish. The wise man builds his house on a rock, while the foolish man builds on sand. When the inevitable storms come, only one house remains standing.
This simple yet powerful story challenges us to reflect on what we’re building our lives upon. Are we like the wise man who not only hears Jesus’ words but puts them into practice? Or are we like the foolish man who hears but does not act?
It’s important to note that both builders face the storm. Faith doesn’t exempt us from hardship. Rain will fall, rivers will rise, and winds will blow. The difference lies in our preparation. When our foundation is secure—when it’s built on Christ and His teachings—we are able to endure whatever trials come our way.
Jesus isn’t calling us just to admire His words or agree with them intellectually. He’s calling us to do them. Faithfulness is the key. Reading Scripture, attending church, and singing worship songs are all good—but if they don’t translate into a transformed life of trust, humility, forgiveness, and love, we’re building on sand.
In today’s world, many voices compete for our attention, offering quick fixes and temporary satisfaction. Culture often encourages building on the sands of success, popularity, wealth, or comfort. But when life becomes unstable—as it often does—those foundations quickly wash away.
This parable also speaks to community. As a church, we are builders together. Our ministries, relationships, and decisions must also rest on the solid foundation of Jesus’ teachings. When we build on Him, we are not only prepared individually but strengthened collectively.
As we prepare for worship together this Sunday, I invite you to dig deep with self-examination. Are there areas in your life where you’ve chosen the easy path of sand rather than the firm foundation of faithfulness? Perhaps it’s in your relationships, your integrity, or your spiritual discipline. Jesus invites us to hear His words—and live them out. Is your life anchored in His truth? How can you encourage others to live out their faith in real, practical ways? Then, no matter what storms come, you’ll stand firm—not because of your strength, but because of the Rock you’ve built upon.
