We have been in the midst of a sermon series for the last month titled “Sing to the Lord.” Each week our focus has been on one of the Psalms from the Old Testament. The Book of Psalms contains 150 beautiful songs and poems that have been passed down through the ages. What a wonderful sermon series.
Pastor Kevin preached on Psalm 84, encouraging us to sing our own song, and we celebrated the lives of all the saints who sang before us. Pastor Rares, from Romania, preached on Psalm 40. He shared with us about God’s faithfulness in his life and the spiritual transformation now taking place in his country. Pastor Todd preached last Sunday on Psalm 146 about how God calls us to practice acts of justice and social holiness.
This Sunday our hymnbook scripture text is Psalm 47. We will sing to our Lord in worship with songs of praise. We’ll engage in conversation about how and why we praise the Lord. Our liturgical calendar year ends (Advent starts next week) as we celebrate with praise to our king on this “Christ the King” Sunday.
Throughout biblical history there were kings, and there are kings in other parts of the world today. I’ll encourage us to think more about “divine leadership” versus “traditional kingship.” My hope is we can see how Jesus was a very different kind of king. One that rules and reigns in our lives in transforming us and the world today.
Please join me this Sunday in worship. Just maybe we will clap, shout, and “Sing Praises to Our King” together.
Blessings, in Christ!
