My Followers Know My Voice

As we gather this coming Sunday, we’ll spend some time with Jesus’ words in John 10:1–10, where he paints a vivid picture of himself as the Good Shepherd. It’s a familiar image for many of us—but it’s also one we can easily rush past without really sitting with what it means.

Jesus says, “My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.” That’s simple, but it’s not always easy.

We live in a world full of noise. There are so many voices competing for our attention—news, social media, expectations from others, even that inner voice that can be pretty hard on us. Some of those voices are helpful. Some… not so much. And it can get tricky trying to sort out which is which.

That’s why this image of the Good Shepherd matters. Jesus reminds us that his voice is different. He doesn’t push or shame or confuse. He calls. He invites. He leads us toward life—real, abundant life.

But recognizing that voice takes practice.

Listening to Jesus isn’t just about hearing a verse on Sunday morning and moving on. It’s about creating space in our lives to actually pay attention—through prayer, Scripture, quiet moments, even in conversations with others. Over time, we start to notice the tone of his voice. It’s steady. It’s patient. It’s grounded in love.

And when we begin to recognize Jesus’ voice, something shifts. We start to trust him on a whole different level. We begin to follow him, even when we’re not totally sure where the path leads.

In our United Methodist tradition, we talk a lot about grace—how God is always reaching out to us, meeting us where we are, and continuing to shape us over time. The voice of Jesus is part of that ongoing grace. It’s there at the beginning, calling us. It’s there when we need reassurance. And it keeps showing up, guiding us as we grow.

Jesus also says, “I am the gate.” That might sound a little strange at first, but it’s really about safety and belonging. In him, we find a place where we are known and cared for. We’re not wandering on our own—we’re held, guided, and given what we need.

So, in preparation for this Sunday, I want to invite you to reflect on a couple of simple questions: What voices have been loud in your life lately? And how might you make a little more room to listen for Jesus’s voice?

Chances are, he’s already speaking.

Peace,

Pastor Kevin
