When was a time in your life you were in awe of something or someone? Awe of course has come to me in other points of my life. Psalm 8 has influenced countless people across the ages in solitary and corporate experiences of awe.
3 When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars that you have established;
4 what are humans that you are mindful of them,
mortals[a] that you care for them?
Awe is a universal human experience. Heavens, stars, God’s finger and human mindfulness are but a few as we read verses 3 and 4 of the Psalm.
It is graduation week at our house. Liz received (receives) her Baccalaureate degree in Social Work on Saturday, May 13, from Xavier University. Liz’s graduation was an awesome experience. When I think about all that she went through to arrive at this day, it is nothing short of a miracle. AWE.
Our participation in her life, as a refugee from violence and oppression, has been the honor of our life. AWE.
AWE has been in our story together. Finding God at work in the midst of our life has been a journey. As we became a family together over these past few years, we discovered some commonalities in our search and experience of AWE.
For example, Liz finds AWE in a walk in the forest and so do we. It was a great day when we found the connection of these passions. Our home is close to the Mt. Airy Forest, and in the summer we go to Vermont. Both places are filled with beauty and awe.
Today, as we continue our worship series on Holy Ground, you will have the opportunity to receive a seedling of either a Tulip Poplar or a Gray Dogwood. It is our hope that you will plant some AWE with those you love and where you live.
While all of us experience transitions in our life, we should remember they can be set ups for the possibility of God’s AWE.
