Catching the Breeze

A pastor shared that one of the first lessons they learned after first arriving in Africa was where to sit. They would come out the front door to enjoy the porch. Before sitting down, they walked the porch from one end to the other. They wanted to sit so they could catch the breeze because it moved, shifting from place to place.

Sometimes it was still and calm.  When the wind blew fresh and strong they were refreshed and sighed with joy. The movement of the air was always joyfully received for it broke through the heavy air that could feel hot and oppressive.

The Holy Spirit was present at Creation, breathing life into everything that God made.  On the first Pentecost, The Holy Spirit showed up in a mighty way: a violent wind came and tongues of fire came to rest on the heads of each person gathered.  The Holy Spirit anointed those present and the Church was filled with the awesome power of God.

There are times when I want God to speak through a mighty wind!   Sometimes we have the experience of Elijah who did not hear God in the earthquake, wind, or fire, but in a still small voice.

This Sunday, we will explore how God’s power refreshes us and is made perfect in our weakness.  We will celebrate our God who is still filling God’s people with amazing power and strength to fulfill our mission:  to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

I am looking forward to connecting with you this weekend in-person or online at 9:30 or 11:00 a.m.

Peace,

Pastor Cathy
